As seniors get admissions decisions from the colleges they have applied to, dealing with a 'yes' or a 'no' is an important part of the process.  I am passing along this blog entry from Georgia Tech Admissions, which I believe will add perspective to the decisions that lie ahead.

Stanford PreCollegiate Studies- Summer Program for "extended learning opportunities"

See Your Students Thrive at Stanford This Summer

Dear Mike Kulp,

As a high school college counselor, you are a critical resource to your students as they plan for their future. We hope that you will look over our program information and discuss the benefits of attending a Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies summer program with your top students as they make plans for Summer 2020.

Please direct students to our website to learn more about our diverse program offerings. You will also be receiving a poster in the mail soon, and we hope that you will display it so that students at Social Circle High School can discover our summer program opportunities.

We offer programs across a wide variety of disciplines—including arts, business, humanities, math, science, and more—allowing highly motivated students to investigate advanced topics not typically taught in secondary schools. Participants engage in small classes with brilliant instructors and peers who share their passions.

Deadlines for most of our summer programs are in February, with some early round deadlines in January. Admission is selective. Limited financial aid is available.
·  Stanford Summer Humanities Institute brings students in grades 10 and 11 together to explore the big questions at the heart of the humanities. Seminars are led by distinguished Stanford professors during this three-week residential program.

·  Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes allows students currently in grades 8–11 to apply to a single-subject intensive course selected from a wide range of disciplines, and benefit from small class size and academically themed residences.

·  Stanford AI4ALL invites students in 9th grade to apply to this three-week residential summer program. Participants learn about topics in AI, partake in ongoing research at Stanford, and receive mentorship from professors, graduate students, and industry professionals. Young women and students from underrepresented and/or low-income backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply.

·  Stanford University Mathematics Camp (SUMaC) students participate in a highly-selective program centered around lectures, guided research, and group problem-solving in advanced math topics. This four-week program is intended for an elite group of talented students in grades 10 and 11.

·  Stanford Pre-Collegiate University-Level Online Math and Physics offers 13 courses throughout the year, including a summer term for high school students, grades 9–12. Students earn Stanford University Continuing Studies credit.

Again, we hope that you will share these opportunities with your students and encourage them to apply to join us on the Stanford campus this summer.

Sincerely,
Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies Team

Summer STEM Program for Women at Cornell

Dear Fellow Educator,

The CURIE and CATALYST Academies are one-week summer residential programs for high school students who excel in math and science, enjoy solving problems, and want to learn more about careers in engineering. The target population for the CURIE Academy is rising junior and senior women students of all backgrounds; while the target population for the CATALYST Academy are rising junior and senior male and female students from backgrounds (African American, Native American/Alaska Native, Latino/a and Pacific Islander, and/or first generation college students) severely underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines.

During these summer academies, Cornell University's world-renowned faculty and graduate students lead classes, lab sessions, and a research project designed for Academy participants. During the week, students work in teams conducting research and learning to solve problems that mirror real-life situations. In addition, social events, panel discussions, and other out-of-classroom activities provide participants with opportunities to network informally with each other and Cornell faculty, staff, and students.

Primary goals of our academies include:
  • Expose students to the exciting opportunities that exist for them in engineering;
  • Help students understand that women and all underrepresented minorities belong and are needed in STEM fields;
  • Demonstrate the connections between the study of engineering and solving problems affecting people and society.
Please share the enclosed information about the CURIE and CATALYST Academies with eligible students interested in STEM fields. We also encourage you to share this information with science and math teachers so they may distribute it to their students. Rising seniors (class of 2021) who are African/Black American, Latino, Native American/Alaska Native, or Pacific Islander and/or first generation college students meeting the requirements below will be automatically considered for a tuition waiver for the 2020 CATALYST Academy or CURIE Academy.
  • Math Score on the SAT/PSAT/Subject Test should be 620 or above (or equivalent ACT score of 28 or above) and/or
  • Have taken, currently taking, or plan to take the following courses prior to graduating in 2021: Calculus, Physics, and/or Chemistry (or related advanced Science and Math courses)
All program materials including the link to the online application and the recommendation form for our summer academies are available at the following websites:

Additionally, a PDF version of our Program Overviews (below) and recruitment poster can be downloaded at the following link: CURIE & CATALYST Program Overviews & Flyer [pdf].

First Dual Enrollment Meeting Is a Few Days Away!

DUAL ENROLLMENT IS A COMPLICATED ANIMAL WITH A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES TO GET HURT WHEN NOT HANDLED CORRECTLY.
Michael Kulp

Dual Enrollment is a great option for families, but there are many things that students and parents need to know going in.

There will be the first of three meetings offered to students AND parents providing information about dual enrollment classes next year on Thursday, December 12th at 6 pm in the Cafeteria.  Attendance at one of the three meetings is mandatory for any student and parent of a dual enrollment wannabe student.  The first meeting will have representatives from the three main colleges that we dual enroll with- Athens Technical College, Georgia Military College and Georgia State University Perimeter.
They will share what requirements a student must have in order to get into their dual enrollment programs, so this meeting will provide the biggest punch!

If you cannot make this meeting, Mr. Kulp will provide a Saturday morning meeting for students and for parents who work late shifts at their jobs and cannot make an evening meeting on Saturday, January 25th at 9 am.

Last, Mr. Kulp will offer one more evening meeting on Thursday, January 30th at 6pm in the Cafeteria for anyone who has not been able to attend one of the first two meetings.

Again, attendance at one of these meetings is mandatory for anyone who will seek to dual enroll in 2020-21!
