Ty Reed Scholarship

TY REED MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Application due date: April 22, 2020
Ty Reed Scholarship

Dear High School Senior,

We are honored that you have decided to apply for the 2020 “Ty Reed Memorial Scholarship.” You are required to be accepted to a higher institution of learning to be eligible for this scholarship, but you may submit your application to us while you are waiting for confirmation from a college/university. If you are awarded the scholarship, the check will be made out to you and the school. Doyle Timothy (Ty) Reed, Jr. died before you were even born, so you may not know much about how the scholarship got started. On March 25, 1993, near the end of his senior year, our eighteen-year-old son Ty was involved in an automobile accident, resulting in multiple injuries that included critical brain damage. After surgery at Newton County Piedmont Hospital for his internal injuries, Ty was flown to Georgia Baptist Hospital, where he was sustained on life support until Saturday afternoon, March 27th , when he was pronounced dead. At Morgan County High School, Ty had been very active in Drama and Tennis, and was the president of Teens Leaning on Teens. He was looking forward to attending what is now called Valdosta University and had received a scholarship to major in Theater Arts and minor in Education. He had been a member of Centennial Baptist Church for six years, where he was involved in Sunday School and the youth group. Ty was excited about life and loved to make other people smile because of his positive attitude and kind deeds or laugh at his crazy antics. Just before he left the house on the day of his wreck, he proclaimed, “It’s a beautiful day and I feel great!” We pray that you will live a long and fruitful life, but you never know when it will be your last day on Earth. As you are preparing for your future as an adult, it’s a good time to seriously ask yourself if you are prepared for death if it should happen tomorrow. Have you accepted Jesus as your personal Savior? If you haven’t, we encourage you not to waste another second. As soon as possible, talk to your parents, or one of the youth leaders or another staff member at your church to find out how you can be saved! We know that our precious Ty is rejoicing in Heaven, but we miss him and want to do things to cherish his memory here on Earth. At his death, several of his organs were donated so that others could live longer. Later, the Ty Reed Memorial Playground was built at Centennial, and a banner in remembrance of Ty (it says “Mediator” because of Ty’s desire to see everyone get along with each other) was made to use in the church. Beginning in 1993, with the help of donations from friends and family and the proceeds of The Ty Reed Golf Tournament, we have awarded at least one scholarship every year to a deserving high school senior in Ty’s memory. In all, 95 scholarships ranging from $500-$3500 have been awarded If you have any questions about completing your application, please feel free to contact one of us by e-mail or phone (voice or text): Tim - reed.dtr@gmail.com or (678) 878-1142 or Caren - reed.caren@comcast.net or (678) 447-1170. If we aren’t available when you call, please leave a message with a phone number where you can be reached.

EMAIL COMPLETED APPLICATIONS TO: reed.dtr@gmail.com

 Sincerely, Tim and Caren Reed

Blessed to Be A Counselor

There seems to be a "day" or "week" dedicated to every group and every cause in the world.  Some of my favorites are-

February 1st- Spunky Old Broads Day
February 4th- Thank a Mailman Day
February 6th- National Chopsticks Day

The Third Week of February is dedicated to International Flirting Week.
And...
This week has been School Counselor's Week, a week we stop to recognize the important role great school counseling can bring to a school.

At the end of this week, I (Mr. Kulp) would like to take this opportunity to say how blessed I am to serve Social Circle High School.  It is a honor to come here every day and work with the great students, parents and staff members.  Each day I see our school continue to grow towards academic excellence with the sole goal of preparing our students for the world beyond our walls.  To watch young men and women grow in maturity is a privilege that I do not take for granted.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this community!  Go Redskins!!

Arrangements for Emory Griffith, IV

This Saturday, a memorial service for Emory Griffith will take place at JC Harwell Funeral Home in Covington, GA at 1 pm.  The address is 2157 East St, Covington, GA 30014.

Parents,

This is a great time to be with your student.  Our students are going through genuine grief and are in need of parents plus their school and their friends to get through this.  You are an important part of the process of going through this grief.  Your role is one that no one else in the world can play.  Students need you to walk through this with them, and this memorial service may serve as an important milestone on this journey for your student.

As a school community, we are your partners.  We are walking it out with you guys.  We have been working to meet with students who have been impacted by this loss.  Please reach out to us if you see signs that your student is not making forward progress in dealing with this loss.  Here are a couple of things to watch for:

  • A loss in appetite or a desire to over eat.  Roughly, any major changes in this department are pointing to food being a coping mechanism for the work that the heart is not undertaking.
  • A disturbance in sleep patterns.  Nights on end of tossing and turning are going to be a threat to your student's ability to process this loss.  This is normal early in the process, but if you see it continue in the weeks ahead, it may be time to get some help.
  • Excessive isolation and a downcast spirit.  Of course, this is normal in the early days, but a continuous effort to engage your kid can keep this from being a weight that will drag your child down weeks from now.  Go for walks.  Break out the fishing poles.  Whatever you can do to engage, do it.  This is an awful time for your student, but this may very well be the time they look back on as a 28 year old and say, "Man, my parent was awesome to me when I lost my friend."
  • Making comments about self harm.  If your radar goes off, there is probably something to it. Things like, "I wish I were dead..." or "You won't have me to deal with anymore..." can be signs that your student or one of his friends is contemplating self harm.  If you are scared and want advice, call Mr. Kulp or Ms. Holton at SCHS.  If you feel that quick response is needed, call 1 (800) 273-8255 or an emergency room at a hospital has folks who work there who can evaluate the situation and give you advice, usually at no cost.
This tragedy has been hard on our students, yet it is opening up doors to talk and grow.  As a parent, you are able to be the force for that growth.  Linked below is a list of counseling resources in the area that you may find helpful as you seek to love your son or daughter in every way.  Your SC Family loves your individual family!
