Ty Reed Scholarship

TY REED MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Application due date: April 22, 2020
Ty Reed Scholarship

Dear High School Senior,

We are honored that you have decided to apply for the 2020 “Ty Reed Memorial Scholarship.” You are required to be accepted to a higher institution of learning to be eligible for this scholarship, but you may submit your application to us while you are waiting for confirmation from a college/university. If you are awarded the scholarship, the check will be made out to you and the school. Doyle Timothy (Ty) Reed, Jr. died before you were even born, so you may not know much about how the scholarship got started. On March 25, 1993, near the end of his senior year, our eighteen-year-old son Ty was involved in an automobile accident, resulting in multiple injuries that included critical brain damage. After surgery at Newton County Piedmont Hospital for his internal injuries, Ty was flown to Georgia Baptist Hospital, where he was sustained on life support until Saturday afternoon, March 27th , when he was pronounced dead. At Morgan County High School, Ty had been very active in Drama and Tennis, and was the president of Teens Leaning on Teens. He was looking forward to attending what is now called Valdosta University and had received a scholarship to major in Theater Arts and minor in Education. He had been a member of Centennial Baptist Church for six years, where he was involved in Sunday School and the youth group. Ty was excited about life and loved to make other people smile because of his positive attitude and kind deeds or laugh at his crazy antics. Just before he left the house on the day of his wreck, he proclaimed, “It’s a beautiful day and I feel great!” We pray that you will live a long and fruitful life, but you never know when it will be your last day on Earth. As you are preparing for your future as an adult, it’s a good time to seriously ask yourself if you are prepared for death if it should happen tomorrow. Have you accepted Jesus as your personal Savior? If you haven’t, we encourage you not to waste another second. As soon as possible, talk to your parents, or one of the youth leaders or another staff member at your church to find out how you can be saved! We know that our precious Ty is rejoicing in Heaven, but we miss him and want to do things to cherish his memory here on Earth. At his death, several of his organs were donated so that others could live longer. Later, the Ty Reed Memorial Playground was built at Centennial, and a banner in remembrance of Ty (it says “Mediator” because of Ty’s desire to see everyone get along with each other) was made to use in the church. Beginning in 1993, with the help of donations from friends and family and the proceeds of The Ty Reed Golf Tournament, we have awarded at least one scholarship every year to a deserving high school senior in Ty’s memory. In all, 95 scholarships ranging from $500-$3500 have been awarded If you have any questions about completing your application, please feel free to contact one of us by e-mail or phone (voice or text): Tim - reed.dtr@gmail.com or (678) 878-1142 or Caren - reed.caren@comcast.net or (678) 447-1170.
