Florida Southern College

Florida Southern College (FSC) in Lakeland, Florida is a private, liberal arts college.  This college likes to refer to themselves as the “Wright” college as a play on words, because Frank Lloyd Wright designed several buildings on campus.  In fact, many fans of the famous architect’s work will come to this campus as it is the single largest collection of structures designed by Wright in the world.  This school started out as a United Methodist college and still maintains the ideals that being a United Methodist school espoused.  This does not mean that every student who comes to FSC must be a Christian, but there are basic ideals that all students must adhere to like, honesty and treating your fellow classmates with dignity and respect.  Because of the school’s heritage, religious groups on campus flourish, but participation is in no way forced or sponsored by the college.  Class sizes are small (18 average), and they offer over fifty majors, eight pre-professional degrees, nine master’s & doctoral programs and 92% of all students live on campus.  There are fraternities and sororities on campus with about 30% participating in them.  This means that if your student doesn’t participate in Greek life, he or she will share that in common with 70% of the other students.

FCS’s total cost of attendance is $45,987.  The average aid package is $25,081, and 100% of first year students receive financial aid.  Some things that make this place look like a better bargain are that they guarantee every student the chance to travel abroad, to land an internship and to graduate in four years.  This will allow students to avoid the 5th year of tuition!  As many of our students are interested in nursing, FCS offers direct entry into the nursing program as an incoming freshman.  There is no reapplying to the nursing program after the first 60 hours of college.

FCS asks each student at convocation to recite these words: “I vow to leave this place better than I found it.”  The faculty in turn vows to leave the students better than they received them.  This a good foundation for the college experience.  It is about growing.  If you are interested in checking out FCS, they offer a fly-in program where they will reimburse for up to $250 of the plane ticket for a well qualified student.  Here are the details: https://www.flsouthern.edu/undergraduate/visit/fly-on-us.aspx
